There is no backlog

A backlog is a landfill. Work lives on a user story map, not a list of tickets.

  1. Other tools enforce one person per story. We support multiple people on the same story.
  2. One active story per person, enforced at the system level.
  3. Deploy and Release are separate events, and separate buttons. There's no fake "Done" column.

Work is prioritised across horizontal activity tracks and vertical slices. No flat backlog lists that grow to infinity and rot.

3

One active story per person

Other tools reward the appearance of productivity - a mountain of work-in-progress that looks busy and ships nothing.

WIP limit of 1, enforced by the system.

4

Inventory is waste

If users don't have the feature, it is not done.

Surface stale feature flags and unreleased work.

5

Nothing is hidden

Every change is an immutable event. No measurement of individuals. There are no manager dashboards. The whole team sees the same thing.

Cumulative flow over time. The bands tell you whether work is moving or piling up.

6

See who works with whom

The pairing matrix: who worked together, how often, and how recently. Stories an AI agent has read are tagged too. No other tool can even draw this view.

  2. Red cells mean two people have never paired in this window

Pairing is configurable per team - solo for one, ensemble for many.

7

AI second

Connect your AI coding assistant to a map via MCP. It reads the user stories and acceptance criteria, then builds what you specified, one story at a time.

17+ people? You don't have a team, you have teams. Run one Mainline per team under a single org - separate maps, one bill. There's no enterprise tier because there's no such thing as a 30-person team.

Coming from another tool?

vs Jira

"Frederick Taylor would have loved Jira."

vs Linear

"The best sprint tool. Mainline is for teams who chose not to run sprints."

vs Asana

"A generic project tool for every department. Mainline is shaped for engineering teams only."

The 14-Day Reset

When the trial starts, pick one project and move it to a Mainline map. Commit to one active story per person. No side-tracking. If it's not on the map, it doesn't count.

Spend two weeks finishing work before starting more.

Most teams say they do continuous integration and continuous delivery, and that they're "agile". The 14-Day Reset is a litmus test.

You'll see the gap in the first week.
